One of the unique characteristics of Barriques is they built everything themselves. The only exception is some of the chairs were purchased, but even still, most of those were built by the employees. While it may not be the best business plan to build everything yourself without the assistance of an architect, designer, or carpenter, it definitely brings more heart and soul into the place. Each tiny blemish represents the work and toil that went into make Barriques the establishment it is. Each and every “flaw’ is perfectly imperfect. Barriques was founded in 1998 as a wine store at 1831 Monroe Street. The storefront was unoccupied at the time, and the idea to make it their own sparked in Finn’s head. The two founders would work their day jobs, grab a cup of joe, then head over to work Barriques open to close. With next to no money left at the end of the work weeks, the two were having plenty of fun while receiving a first-hand crash-course as business owners. Five years later, in 2003, the two decided to add coffee into their mix instead of solely slinging wine. In the five years leading up to their coffee addition, the two learned how much they and their customers loved coffee, but more importantly, how they can do it better than the stores doing it around them. With twenty-three years of experience, the two have come a long way, but that doesn’t mean they forgot about the trials and tribulations that led them to where they are now. Make your way into Barriques and see the personal spaces for yourself and, more importantly, enjoy your experience.
