Argus, in Greek mythology, was a one hundred-eyed giant that served Hera, Zeus’ wife. Argus’ was in charge of standing guard over lo, who was a nymph Hera knew Zeus was having an affair with. Zeus had Hermes kill Argus to liberate his mistress. Hera monumented her loyal guard by placing all one hundred of Argus’ eyes in her Peacock’s tail. Argus BarGrille received its name as the building that houses the business is “Madison’s oldest surviving commercial building.” Adding to the name, the building initially served The Wisconsin Argus, a Madison newspaper, upon the building’s completion sometime between 1844 and 1847. The building took on the name Argus Building and underwent extensive repairs throughout the 1990s. In 2007, the building was restored again to resemble the inside of the building during the 1890s, hence paying homage the Argus Building’s history as well as The Wisconsin Argus, just as Hera paid homage to her guard, Argus the giant.
